Why Renewing Your Mind Is Crucial for God’s Calling

God's Calling ep 2

Have you ever felt completely sure about what God was calling you to do—
and yet, almost immediately, your mind whispered, “That’ll never work”?

You pray for direction, hear God clearly, and then the moment He shows you the next step… you start to reason your way out of it.

If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone.

In this week’s episode of God’s Calling Podcast, Shauna unpacks why renewing your mind isn’t just a nice idea—it’s absolutely essential if you want to walk boldly in God’s calling.

The Battle Between Faith and Logic

Romans 12:2 tells us, “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”

For years, that verse might sound like something we’ve all heard a thousand times. But Shauna explains that renewing your mind isn’t about positive thinking or forcing yourself to “stay inspired.” It’s about retraining your thoughts to agree with God’s truth, not your fears.

Because the truth is—your mind will try to talk you out of the very thing God is leading you into.

Shauna shares her own experience of wrestling with that tension when God asked her to create her own stages—to host her own events instead of waiting for invitations to speak somewhere else.

At first, it made no sense.
No big platform.
No team.
No clear plan.

Every logical thought said, “This isn’t how it’s supposed to work.”

But God kept whispering, “Stop waiting. Start building.”

And as Shauna admits, what looked like practicality was really fear. The desire to obey was there, but so was the need to control how obedience looked.

You Can’t Micro-Manage God

When fear and control drive your mindset, you end up trying to manage God instead of trusting Him—and that’s when the blessings get blocked.

After months of overthinking, Shauna finally surrendered.
Her prayer became simple:

“Okay, Lord. If this is really You, I’ll build the stage You’re asking me to build. I’ll host my own events and trust You to fill the seats.”

And that one decision changed everything.

The right people began showing up.
Resources appeared out of nowhere.
Mentors offered advice at just the right moment.
Doors opened that no amount of planning could have forced.

It was as if God said, “Now that your mind agrees with Me, I can move.”

That’s the power of a renewed mind—it creates alignment.
When your thoughts line up with God’s truth, your faith activates, your confidence grows, and your obedience produces fruit.

When Peter’s Mindset Almost Cost Him the Miracle

Shauna also shares one of the most powerful illustrations from Scripture: Peter walking on water.

Peter heard Jesus say “Come.”
He believed—and actually stepped out of the boat.
But the moment his thoughts shifted from faith to fear, he started to sink.

The miracle didn’t stop because Jesus’ power ran out.
It stopped because Peter’s mindset changed.

The same happens to us.
We start strong in faith… until the wind picks up, the doubts get louder, and fear starts whispering, “You can’t do this.”

But Jesus didn’t shame Peter for doubting. He simply reached out, caught him, and said, “Why did you doubt?”

That’s God’s heart for us too.
He’s not angry that we struggle to believe. He just wants our minds anchored in His truth instead of our fears.

Step Out of the Boat

Maybe right now, God is inviting you to step out of your own boat—out of your comfort zone—into something that makes no logical sense.

The question isn’t whether you’ll sink or swim.
It’s whether your thoughts will stay fixed on the One who called you.

Because when your mind is renewed—anchored in faith rather than fear—you don’t just survive the storm.
You walk on top of it.

Renewing Your Mind in Practice

If your next step feels impossible, start with your mindset.

Pray:

“Lord, renew my mind so my thoughts line up with Yours.”

Ask Him to silence the noise of doubt and give you courage to say yes, even when the path doesn’t make sense.

Because once your mind changes, your direction changes.
And once your direction changes, God can move you into what He’s already prepared for you.

A Final Thought

What thought or belief do you need to surrender so God can renew your mind and move you forward in your calling?

Sometimes the only thing standing between hearing God’s call and walking in it…
is the mindset that says, “It won’t work.”

Let’s renew that thought today—and replace it with faith that says,

“Here I am, Lord. Use me. Send me.”
